If there is one post-1920s typewriter that deserves a place in this museum, it is the Olivetti Valentine, a design by Ettore Sottsass. Sottsass established the notion that office equipment could be seductive and decorative, not merely functional. The Valentine typewriter, a candy-apple red, molded-plastic portable released in 1969, subverted altogether the very idea of a practical instrument for writing Ñ and profoundly influenced designers of today, like Philippe Starck, who make little pretense at usefulness. This space-age machine that was built in 1970 can be found in many collections of industrial design in museums such as the MoMa, the V&A in London. The typewriter is in excellent condition.
